Gina Robinson Ungar became a Hoosier in 2005, when she left her family dairy farm in Central Massachusetts and drove assorted cattle, chickens and cats to begin a new farming adventure and, ultimately, a marriage adventure in Boonville, Warrick County. She established a “cow share micro-dairy,” milking just a few cows for some 50-100 local families, in addition to raising laying hens, sheep, and dairy goats. Although Gina phased out the farm starting in 2016 and moved with her family to the city of Evansville in 2017, she remains passionate about the healing powers of food and living things.
Professionally, Gina serves as a case manager in Evansville’s low-income-serving community health clinic system, assisting individuals and families in accessing health coverage as an Indiana Navigator, conducting needs assessments with special attention to patients’ housing and mental health needs, and troubleshooting a wide variety of situations in order to promote patient self-determination, safety, and wellbeing. Gina’s previous positions directly meeting affordable housing needs include work administering Rapid Re-Housing services to those exiting homelessness, as well as in the local Housing Authority.
Gina got involved with politics first as a volunteer for the 2008 Obama campaign, and joined the Warrick County Democrats in 2013. She was elected as a National Delegate for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and as a Precinct Committee-Person for the Vanderburgh County Democrats in 2018. Gina is a graduate of the Indiana Democratic Party Emerging Leaders Project, Class of 2017-18. An avid door-to-door canvasser, Gina has campaigned for Democrats in at least six states. Whether at work or on the campaign trail, Gina has been honored to listen and learn from the people most impacted by policy and funding decisions, including the unhoused, survivors of trauma, recent immigrants, caregivers, and the struggling middle class.
At present, Gina serves on the Board of the Evansville-Vanderburgh Human Relations Commission, the agency providing local enforcement of civil rights law. Gina is also active in her church, serving as a deacon, in the choir, and as a Justice Ministry team leader connecting with dozens of local faith communities (networked as a DART affiliate organization) to identify and address unresolved community problems. Most recently, Gina has joined a new coalition of medical professionals and community wellness organizations working to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health concerns, particularly in underserved communities.
Gina graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Sociology and earned a M.S. in Public Service Administration at the University of Evansville. She is married to pianist (and amateur handyman) Dr. Garnet Ungar. Together, they have two sons, ages 14 and 12, both of whom attend EVSC public schools.
