As a former public library director, Mónica Casanova has a keen understanding of local taxes and government funding processes. She also has advanced degrees from IUPUI in Public History and Library Science. Mónica Casanova is a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and Purdue University. Mónica is also the Assistant Director of the Immigration Clinic at Lafayette Urban Ministry and teaches English as a second language at the Learning Network. Mónica herself is an immigrant, born in Mexico, raised in southern California and Indiana. Previously she has served on the legislative committee of the Indiana Library Federation, interacting with state legislators and advocating on behalf of libraries. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2002 thanks to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act signed by Ronald Reagan. For the last twelve years she had worked as a librarian and library administrator. Mónica lives in Lafayette with her husband and two children. Mónica has been dedicated both in her career and community activities to make the Greater Lafayette Area a welcoming place for all people to work, live, and raise a family. She is bicultural and bilingual. She volunteers at the local food bank and is a board member of Food Finders Food Bank, Inc. Mónica is a Rotary member of the Daybreak Lafayette club. Mónica is the first Latinx to be elected in Tippecanoe County. Mónica is the Fairfield Township Trustee. She understands the power of representation and is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in Tippecanoe County.
