Katie McHugh, MD is a queer OB/GYN, chronic pelvic pain specialist, and abortion provider who prioritizes compassion and advocacy in the care of her patients. She is the co-owner of Indiana Pelvic Pain Specialists and joins the faculty of the University of Cincinnati Department of OB/GYN in the fall of 2022.
Advocacy for abortion access and reproductive justice are a critical facet of Katie’s professional effort. Beyond just providing this compassionate, evidence-based healthcare, she also is an outspoken voice for the need to access the right of bodily autonomy and self-determination in the form of abortion. Katie has published pieces in the Washington Post, Vox, Slate, and the Indy Star and been additionally quoted on NPR, New York Times, USA Today, and nearly every other major news outlet. A highly sought-after public speaker, Katie has spoken at rallies on the steps of the United States Supreme Court, has lectured all over the country, and has co-hosted events with celebrities like Olivia Wilde to raise funds for abortion access.
Katie serves on the Boards of Physicians for Reproductive Health, an advocacy organization for abortion providers, as well as OutCare Health, which connects LGTBQ+ patients with healthcare providers trained in caring for the community’s specific needs. She has previously served on the Executive Board of the American College of OB/GYN (ACOG), the highest position an OB/GYN can hold in their professional organization. She co-hosts the podcast O+G Advocates, which empowers OB/GYN and other healthcare providers to extend their advocacy outside of the exam room into the community.
Most recently, Katie was named as a 2021 Top Doctor by Indianapolis Monthly. While she has received many other awards for patient care, teaching, and community service, two of her proudest accomplishments are an Advocacy Award from ACOG, in recognition of her contributions to the profession’s advocacy efforts, and the Sunshine Award from her residency classmates, highlighting her positive outlook and indefatigable spirit through difficult times.
An active member of her local community, Katie serves on the Board of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir as well as The Children’s House, an Indianapolis Montessori school. Outside of her professional endeavors, Katie travels frequently with her partner, Becky, and delights in her children’s many sports, creative endeavors, and school activities. The family has the best dogs in the world, who are terribly behaved but deeply lovable.
