Karla Lopez-Owens

Karla is a community volunteer, organizer and a bilingual attorney from Cuernavaca, Mexico. She comes from a working-class, immigrant family and has lived in Indianapolis for over 20 years.

For over 11 years, Karla has fought for social change in Indiana through grassroots organizing and legislative advocacy. Karla‘s efforts focus on advocating for full political participation for all, voter empowerment, transparency and accessibility to government, fair wages, racial justice and immigration reform.

Currently, Karla serves as the Director of Community Outreach with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. Hoping to increase the number of Latina lawyers in the U.S., Karla is a member of the Indiana Hispanic Lawyer’s Committee. She is also a co-founding member of the Indiana Undocumented Youth Alliance (IUYA) formed in 2012. Karla is a passionate advocate for representation and serves as the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus’ Voter Education Chair.

Karla holds a Juris Doctorate from the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and a Bachelor’s of Science from the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
