Karla Lopez-Owens

Karla is a is an attorney, a legislative strategist and a community advocate. Originally from Mexico, she has worked to elevate the voices of the working-class and Latino communities for the last 13 years.

Currently, Karla serves as the Director of Community Outreach and as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

Outside of work, Karla serves as the President of the Indiana Latinx Democratic Caucus (INLDC), an organization that works to promote year-round civic engagement within the Latino and Hispanic community. Prior to becoming the president, Karla served as the Voter Education Chair for 6 years. As an ally, Karla serves on the board of Trinity Haven, an organization that provides safe, welcoming, and affirming housing for LGBTQ+ young adults experiencing housing instability.

In 2024, Karla began hosting an educational civic segment in Spanish on Telemundo Indy, in partnership with the Indiana Latino Expo. Additionally, she also hosts a radio segment on Cultural Manifesto which airs in Indy’s NPR affiliate: WFYI, 90.1. In her free time, Karla tutors and mentors students from Indianapolis Public Schools.

Karla holds a Juris Doctorate from the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and a Bachelor’s of Science from the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
