DeShong Perry-Smitherman is a dedicated community servant with a passion for empowering others. Her career journey, starting as a researcher for the Oprah Winfrey Show, ignited a lifelong commitment to storytelling and making a positive impact. From Emmy-award-winning journalism in Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis to strategic roles at the Eiteljorg Museum and AES Corporation, she has consistently sought opportunities to serve her community.
Currently, DeShong leverages her expertise at Lilly as a Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, championing initiatives that create more inclusive and equitable workplaces. Her dedication to fostering growth extends beyond the corporate world. As co-founder of A Girl’s Gift, Inc., she has mentored hundreds of middle school girls, equipping them with entrepreneurial skills and confidence.
A staunch advocate for those in need, DeShong serves on the boards of The Julian Center and WFYI, where she actively supports survivors of domestic violence and promotes diverse voices in media. Through her leadership and community engagement, she strives to create lasting change and uplift those around her.
DeShong holds a Bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University, a Master’s from the University of Illinois, a Media Management certificate from Northwestern University, and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certificate from Cornell University. She is a proud wife and mother of three.
