      This #BlackHistoryMonth, Hoosier Women Forward is This #BlackHistoryMonth, Hoosier Women Forward is celebrating the Black women in Indiana who broke down barriers to become “firsts”. 

Today we recognize our HWF Vice Chair and Founding Board Member, State Representative @cherrishpryor. She is the first Black woman to hold the Floor Leader position with the @inhousedemocrats and has served District 94 since 2008. We are so proud of her passion and advocacy for women in Indiana!

In 2011, the City of Gary elected Karen Freeman-Wilson as the first Black woman Mayor of any city in Indiana. She previously served as the Attorney General of Indiana and is now doing amazing work with the @thechiurbanleague.

Today we recognize Pamela Carter, who served as Indiana’s Attorney General from 1993-1997. She was the first Black woman to be elected as a state Attorney General in the country.

Julia Carson was the first Black woman to win election to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1972. After serving in the legislature until 1990, she went on to represent the Indianapolis area in Congress from 1997-2007.

Katie Beatrice Hall was the first Black woman to represent Indiana in Congress, serving from 1982-1985. Before Congress, she served from 1974-1982 as one of the first black women in the Indiana legislature.
